Some historians of Jiu-Jitsu say that the origins of "the gentle art" can be traced back to India, where it was practiced by Buddhist Monks. Concerned with self-defense, these monks created techniques based upon principles of balance and leverage, and a system of manipulating the body in a manner where one could avoid relying upon strength or weapons. With the expansion of Buddhism, Jiu-Jitsu spread from Southeast Asia to China, finally arriving in Japan where it developed and gained further popularity.  This martial art was brought to Brazil in 1915 and soon the Gracie family modified it to become what we know today as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Being a grappling martial art, one uses natural body leverage to obtain dominant control on the ground. The practitioner performs the techniques with the objective of rendering his opponent into submission. The moves seek to neutralize, immobilize, and strangle the attacker using the opponent's strength for your advantage, well as leverage principles. It takes years to master yet it is a very effective martial art after a few months of training.

Marcio Laselva is the lead instructor for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at Laselva MMA. Along with Laselva’s excellent instruction, we frequently have black belts from Master Godoi and Master Tozi schools in Brazil visit our gym to teach class.

Classes are typically one hour long with warm-up, BJJ technique, and at least 30 minutes of “rolling” time each session. Monday through Thursday the focus is Gi Jiu-Jitsu with Friday and Saturday no-Gi. Both adult and kids classes are available.

The Team Laselva BJJ team routinely does well in competition including recently placing 4th in a national tournament. Along with the competitive students, there are also a number of participants who take the class for the exercise and self discipline. No matter what your reason for wanting to try BJJ, you will feel right at home as a member of Team Laselva. Many of our students are higher level belts than instructors at other gyms. Come in and experience the difference.
