Instructor: Marcio Laselva
What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art, combat sport system that focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting.
BJJ promotes the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend themselves or another against a bigger, stronger, heavier assailant by using proper technique, leverage, and most notably, taking the fight to the ground, and then applying joint locks and chokeholds to defeat the opponent. BJJ training can be used for sport grappling tournaments and in self-defense situations. Rolling (also known as “sparring” in other martial arts) and live drilling play a major role in training, and a premium is placed on performance, especially in competition, in relation to progress and ascension through its ranking system.
How did BJJ end up in Kansas?
Hailing from Sao Paulo, Brazil, Marcio Laselva introduced BJJ to Kansas. Every current instructor teaching BJJ in the Wichita area has received training or earned their belts under Marcio’s guidance. Marcio is a 3rd degree black belt with 20+ years of experience under Master Roberto Tozi of Brazil.
