March 29th: Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championships

Karate is a martial art created on the island of Okinawa and translates to “empty hand” (Kara=empty, te=hand).  It was devised to be a complete martial art as it incorporates kicks, punches, elbow strikes, throws, takedowns, joint locks, and submissions. Classes are structured around the three main pillars of Karate. Kihon (basics), Kata (forms), and Kumite (sparring).

At Laselva MMA we strive to teach the absolute best of karate. While we do practice some tournament and cage fighting style karate, our main focus is teaching you how to survive a violent confrontation on the street. We also go one step further than to just teach technique; we study the physiology of an attack, the psychology behind an attack, and the strategies most human predators use. We develop strategies to counter these actions to diffuse the situation without fighting, but we also learn how to survive the encounter if confrontation is unavoidable.

Our sparring incorporates everything from tournament point and continuous sparring, MMA fighting, kata based sparring for self defense, ground fighting, and multiple attacker sparring. Because to the severe nature of what we teach, we feel that children under 12 would be better suited to start with one of the many other classes we offer. While this may all sound intense, we also have a lot of fun in the class as well.

Chris Rose is the lead Karate instructor for Laselva MMA. He is a black belt in traditional Okinawan style of Shito-Ryu Karate-Do. He is also a black belt in Batto-Do (samurai sword) and blue belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
